Symmetrical one can be mounted in one direction.
Asymmetric one can be mounted in 2 directions giving You following result:

Pro link guard + asymmetric insert left side OEM 154,2 standard seat high

Pro link guard + symmetric insert total: 156,2 mm your lower the seat 1-1,5 cm seat high lowered. (It is difficult to determine the exact practical gain (theoretically it is 1.5 cm) as it depends on how the rear of the motorcycle is set under its own weight).

Pro link guard + asymmetric insert right side total: 158,2 mm your lower the seat 2,4-3cm seat high lowered. (It is difficult to determine the exact practical gain (theoretically it is 3 cm) as it depends on how the rear of the motorcycle is set under its own weight).

Is the link guard necessary? You can see in the two photos what my own looks like after two seasons of riding. Most likely, without it, the bottom of the damper would cease to exist.
